The Indago 3 all-weather system is a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) system that represents a paradigm shift in what lightweight unmanned aerial systems that can provide robustness, versatility and reliability. Indago 3 features an extended hover and fast forward flight capability that provides, civil, commercial and governmental customers with aerial reconnaissance in areas unreachable by current systems.

The Indago 3 payload system features a quick disconnect adapter (Hot-swappable payload) which allows the operator to choose the appropriate payload for the mission. There are payloads available for a variety of different applications: Pollution monitoring, inspection, ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance), FLIR (Forward looking infrared sensor), agricultural and mapping.

Description

Overall System Description

The Lockheed Martin Indago 3 RPAS is a Vertical Take Off and Landing (VTOL) RPAS able to take-off and recover in a small, coarse area with a minimum of preparation and with limited support equipment.

The aerial segment of the system consists of:

  1. VTOL RPAS, powered by a single LiPo battery and 4 brushless motors
  2. Payload, configured dependent on operational requirements

The ground segment of the system consists of:

  1. GCS / Imperium Hand Controller
  2. Trellisware radio – up to 10+ km while maintaining required bandwidth.
  3. Spares

Depending on actual customer implementation, the aerial and ground segment modules are combined and integrated into the customer’s existing or desired infrastructure for optimum efficiency.

The system can be piloted in the following modes:

  • POS (GPS Assisted control)
  • MAN (Fully manual)
  • NAV (Waypoint navigation)

Mission planning can be performed prior to the mission in an office environment on a PC/Laptop (transferred to the GCS on suitable data storage media) or in the GCS before take-off. The mission is uploaded to the RPAS via the command and control link and activated from the GCS at mission start. The mission can easily be re-planned from the GCS during flight by changing of waypoints behavior and parameters.

Aerial vehicle

Airframe

The airframe is constructed with a combination of fiberglass, carbon and reinforced plastics. The dimensions of the RPA is 81 x 81 x 22 cm unfolded and 30 x 23 x 18 cm folded. Empty weight of the RPA is 2000 g.

Environment

The Lockheed Martin Indago 3 is designed to operate from sub-arctic to semi-arid and tropic climate zones thus adaptable to operations worldwide. The system can operate in a temperature range between -34,4 up to 48,8 ºC. The design has also been adapted to withstand rain, salinity, snow and wind. To withstand sand, dust and humidity during operations the electronic equipment are hidden behind the body shell and with environmental protection features. Specific handling procedures for using the system in salt, sand and dust environment are included in the technical publications. The system is capable of day and night operations.

Signature

The RPAS has low signature characteristics as follows:

  • Visually by small size and color that minimizes risk for detection.
  • Acoustically due to the relatively low propeller speed and optimized aerodynamics (50,5 dB @ 30 ft)
