Keep complex infrastructure reliable, secure and ready for what comes next.
At BSS Holland, you will help build and operate the technical foundation behind our development and operational environments. You make sure systems remain available, secure and maintainable, improve how we monitor and recover them, and help turn infrastructure challenges into robust solutions.
Your primary focus is Linux, Proxmox and self-hosted infrastructure. At the same time, our work creates opportunities to get involved in advanced networking, test environments and software that interacts directly with network interfaces. If you enjoy understanding how systems really work, and using that understanding to make them better, you will find plenty to explore here.
About BSS Holland
BSS Holland helps defense, public safety and security organizations improve situational awareness, decision making and operational effectiveness. We work across the C5ISR domain, combining command and control, communications, computing, cyber, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance with sensor integration and manned, unmanned and remotely operated systems.
We are evolving from a start-up into a scale-up. That means you will find short lines, direct communication, personal responsibility and plenty of room to improve how we work. At the same time, our customers operate in professional, security-sensitive environments where reliability, discretion and mission focus matter. You should feel comfortable in both worlds.
Your role
As Infrastructure Engineer, you take responsibility for the day-to-day operation and continuous improvement of our infrastructure together with our current Infrastructure Engineer. You maintain systems, monitor services, manage clusters and make sure we can recover when something goes wrong.
You will work across Linux systems, Proxmox Virtual Environment, virtual machines, containers and self-hosted services in development, staging and production environments. The role combines routine operational responsibility with troubleshooting, automation, security and longer-term improvements.
Alongside your core infrastructure work, you can contribute to advanced networking challenges. Some of our software interacts directly with network interfaces, creating interesting questions around connectivity, isolation, deployment, monitoring and recovery. Depending on your interests and experience, you can help design test environments, investigate network behaviour and potentially contribute to the software itself.
What you will do
- Operate and maintain Linux systems, Proxmox Virtual Environment, virtual machines, containers and self-hosted services across development, staging and production.
- Manage clusters throughout their lifecycle, including provisioning, configuration, upgrades, capacity planning and troubleshooting.
- Own routine maintenance and monitoring together with our Infrastructure Engineer, including patching systems, investigating alerts, resolving incidents and addressing recurring problems.
- Maintain backups, test restores and continuously improve recovery procedures, observability and actionable alerting.
- Automate repeatable infrastructure work with OpenTofu and Ansible, keeping changes reproducible, documented and reviewable.
- Troubleshoot networking, storage, virtualisation, operating system and hardware issues, including environments built on consumer hardware.
- Strengthen security through pragmatic hardening, access control, secrets management and clear separation of development, staging and production environments.
- Help translate complex networking requirements into robust infrastructure and deployment solutions.
- Build and maintain test environments for networking and infrastructure challenges.
- Investigate connectivity and network behaviour together with software engineers and other technical specialists.
- Document important configurations, decisions and recovery procedures so knowledge is shared rather than dependent on one person.
- Help improve our infrastructure architecture, operational practices, monitoring and automation as BSS continues to scale.
What makes you successful here
- You enjoy taking ownership of infrastructure and feel responsible for keeping systems healthy, not only for deploying them.
- You approach incidents methodically and want to understand the underlying cause rather than simply making an alert disappear.
- You are comfortable working independently on Linux infrastructure and know when a change requires additional review or expertise.
- You enjoy working close to the technology and are curious about what happens between hardware, operating systems, virtualisation, containers, networks and applications.
- You automate recurring work where it adds reliability, but do not automate something simply for the sake of automation.
- You treat monitoring, backups and recovery as part of the system rather than as tasks to address afterwards.
- You think about security as an integral part of infrastructure design and daily operations.
- You communicate directly, document important decisions and share knowledge with colleagues.
- You are pragmatic and comfortable operating in an environment that is growing and where not every process has already been formalised.
- You are curious about unfamiliar networking problems and willing to go deeper when the situation requires it.
- You remain dependable when systems behave unexpectedly and take ownership of problems through to resolution.
Essential requirements
- Practical medior or senior-level experience operating and maintaining Linux infrastructure.
- Strong hands-on experience with Proxmox Virtual Environment and self-hosted infrastructure, including the operational realities of running clusters.
- A solid understanding of networking and a methodical approach to diagnosing connectivity, routing and service issues.
- Practical experience with Docker and containerised services.
- Experience with infrastructure as code and configuration management, particularly OpenTofu and Ansible.
- Confidence troubleshooting the interaction between hardware, virtualisation, operating systems and applications.
- A security-conscious approach to infrastructure, including access control, secrets, patching and separation between development, staging and production.
- NATO citizenship. This is mandatory for the role because of the projects and information involved.
- Professional command of Dutch and English. Dutch does not need to be your first language, but you must be able to operate confidently in Dutch-speaking teams and customer environments.
- Willingness and ability to undergo thorough screening. A valid Certificate of Conduct (VOG) and security clearance (VGB) are mandatory for this position.
- Ability to work from our location in ’t Harde and, when required, at customer or partner locations.
Useful, but not a checklist
Experience with Layer 2 and Layer 3 networking, Docker Compose, Wazuh, Jira or similar tools is useful. Strong IPv6 knowledge, including addressing, routing and troubleshooting, is particularly relevant to some of our work.
Experience with mesh routing protocols such as OLSR, B.A.T.M.A.N. or AODV, or with designing and deploying mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), can be valuable. The same applies to knowledge of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), Certificate Authorities (CAs) and certificate lifecycle management.
If you are interested in software development, knowledge of network interface ownership, packet processing or the boundary between applications and the operating system creates opportunities to contribute beyond infrastructure operations.
We do not expect one person to bring all of this. Strong infrastructure skills, sound judgement and the curiosity to investigate unfamiliar technical problems matter more than checking every box.
Personal projects and serious self-hosting experience are also relevant. If you maintain your own infrastructure, home lab or networking environment, we are interested in what you have built, what went wrong and what you learned from it.
What we offer
- A hands-on infrastructure role with real ownership and direct influence on how BSS operates its technical environments.
- Close collaboration with our current Infrastructure Engineer, software engineers and other technical specialists.
